چکیده

A new thermal field-flow fractionation (ThFFF) method has been developed for the separation and analysis of polyacrylates and acrylic-styrene copolymers. This important class of polymers is commonly used as pressure sensitive adhesives, in coatings and paintings, and as the basis for polyelectrolyte materials. The structure and chemical composition of these polymers play a vital role in the end use of these materials. It is important to accurately analyze and characterize these materials to better understand their structure-property relationships. These polymers have not previously been investigated by ThFFF. Size exclusion chromatography is commonly used to separate these materials. However, SEC is a size based separation and will not differentiate between copolymers of different chemical composition, or between polymers of different architectures if they are the same size. Thermal FFF, on the other hand, separates analytes according to differences in their thermal diffusion (DT) and normal diffusion (D) as expressed in the retention parameter (λ) equation below.

Synthesis and Characterization of Acrylic Copolymers of 4-Chloromethyl Styrene with Incorporation of Phthalimide Groups and Amination of Resulted Polymers

4-ChloroMethyl Styrene (CMS) was copolymerized with different monomers such as Methyl MethAcrylate (MMA), Methyl Acrylate (MA), 2-EthylHexyl Acrylate (EHA) by free radical polymerization method at 70 ±1°C using a,a'-Azobis(IsoButyroNitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator. The copolymer compositions were obtained using related 1HNMR spectra and the poly...

Field-flow fractionation of proteins, polysaccharides, synthetic polymers, and supramolecular assemblies.

This review summarizes developments and applications of flow and thermal field-flow fractionation (FFF) in the areas of macromolecules and supramolecular assemblies. In the past 10 years, the use of these FFF techniques has extended beyond determining diffusion coefficients, hydrodynamic diameters, and molecular weights of standards. Complex samples as diverse as polysaccharides, prion particle...

Synthesis, Characterization and Thermal Stability Study of Styrene-based Ionomers I) Programmed Heating Experiments (10 oC/min to 500 oC)

Ionomers are generally described by copolymers having either acrylic or methacylic acid as one component and the other component is mostly either ethylene or styrene. The objective of this research was to study the thermal behaviour and stability of ionomers of styrene with some alkali metal acrylates. These materials have been synthesized by neutralization of the respective copoly...

Optimization and Characterization of a Microscale Thermal Field-flow Fractionation System

A thorough investigation of the design considerations for microscale thermal field-flow fractionation and characterization of a 25 μm thin microscale thermal field-flow fractionation system is reported. A 4-50 times volume reduction from mesoscale and macroscale systems warrants customized design and operational conditions for microscale separation systems. Theoretical calculations are done to ...
